What are Synonyms and Antonyms?

Synonyms and Antonyms

A synonym is a word that means the same or almost the same as another word. One synonym can replace another in a sentence without changing the meaning, or without changing it very much.

For example: There is a naughty boy who lives down the street.

There is a rude boy who lives down the street.

                                                  naughty - rude

We live close to the beach.

                        We live near the beach.

                                                        close - near

An antonym is a word that is opposite in meaning to another word. Antonyms show how two things are different. Using antonyms will completely change the meaning of your sentence.

Identifying and understanding synonyms and antonyms can help you expand your vocabulary and better understand what you read.

For example: We will play a football match this morning.

We will play a football match this evening

                                                        morning - evening

He will have a cold lemonade after the race.
He will have a hot lemonade after the race.

                                                                    cold - hot
